Peer Review Policy
The Editor-in-Chief is responsible for the final decision on every paper, regardless of the opinion of reviewers or the recommendation of Associate Editors.
Annali Italiani di Chirurgia adopts a double-blind peer review process, ensuring anonymity for both authors and reviewers. The Editorial Office first evaluates submissions to verify structure and formatting. Selected papers are typically reviewed by at least two experts. Reviewers are chosen based on expertise, experience, and absence of conflict of interest. Reviewer feedback is considered by the Editor (typically the Editor-in-Chief or an Editorial Board member), who has final decision-making authority. The published article will indicate the name of the Editor responsible for the final decision. The Editor must recuse themselves from handling submissions with potential conflicts.
Reviewers must maintain strict confidentiality. Manuscripts must not be uploaded to AI tools lacking data privacy. If AI is used to improve review clarity, its use must be declared in the review report.
Peer Review Workflow
Manuscript Submission: The editor conducts an initial scope and quality assessment. Only suitable papers proceed to review.
Anonymization: Author identity is removed before review to maintain double-blind integrity.
Assignment of Reviewers: Experts are invited to evaluate the manuscript based on subject relevance.
Peer Review: Reviewers assess originality, methodology, quality, and relevance. Feedback and recommendations are provided.
Author Revision: Authors respond to feedback. Up to two major revision rounds are allowed. Final decisions rest with the Editor-in-Chief or delegate.
Final Decision: The Editor (typically the Editor-in-Chief or an Editorial Board member) consider all input before deciding on acceptance, rejection, or further revisions.
Author Notification: The author is notified of the decision. Accepted papers move to production, including proofing, copy editing, and formatting. Rejected papers may be appealed by writing to editorial@annaliitalianidichirurgia.it if bias or error is suspected.
In-house Submission
Submissions from editors or staff follow the same standards and editorial process. Involved editors have no access to the manuscript and no role in decisions. Reviews are handled independently, and conflicts of interest are strictly avoided.
If published, authors must confirm no conflict of interest. Editorial staff must not misuse privileged information for personal gain.
